Story

[p]Thank you to everyone who supported the initial appeal. We successfully raised £3,500 to buy an ice machine (& 1-year's maintenance) for Barnwell C ward at Kettering General Hospital (KGH), installed in September 2018 so future patients can enjoy refreshing, ice cold water thanks to dad. We raised a further £1,000 in 2018 through funds from the sales of charity cards and the 2019 Wildlife in Watercolour calendar, to provide support to patients with dementia. I intend to continue raising money for KGH in dad's memory, through greetings cards, calendars and other gifts featuring his beautiful paintings. For more information visit wildlifeinwatercolour.co.uk or find us on Facebook 'wildlifeinwatercolour'.[/p][p]Our story[/p][p]On Monday April 16, 2018, after seven weeks in Kettering General Hospital fighting so hard to live, not least because of his devotion to my mum, Leslie Ellison, a much beloved husband, father and grandpa, lost his battle against leukaemia and sepsis. My dad was truly one of a kind: talented, clever, funny and with a personality, spirit and heart as big as they come. He lit up a room and his lecturer's voice made sure you'd hear him coming! [/p][p]The sepsis meant that my dad was very poorly during the last weeks of his life; he hardly ate or drank anything. Two of his few pleasures were cold milk and iced water, which soothed his dry, sore throat. Unfortunately, ice machines cost the NHS about £3,000 to buy (risk of infection means they have to buy specialist equipment and maintain a strict regime for maintenance), so there wasn't one on his ward. It was hit and miss whether we were able to get it, though the busy nurses tried their best. When dad passed, we decided to raise money to buy an ice machine for the ward in his memory. Installed in September 2018, it has already been used by one of my friends, who found herself on the ward recently.[/p]
