[p]February 2019 update: Thank you to everyone who has given so generously in Sam's memory. Online donations and the 'Santa in the City' run by Sam's former colleagues at Devonshires, together with the associated Gift Aid, have raised an amazing total of over £16,000. We are in discussions with CLEAR International on how we use the funds, which are now safely lodged with CLEAR's parent charity, The Lawyers' Christian Fellowship. We have in mind several projects in Kenya, including possibly an annual 'moot' competition for local law students ('the Sam Moodey memorial cup'), the part-funding of a dedicated prisons paralegal in the Nairobi office to support the charity's work among prisoners, and a bilingual (English and Swahili) 'self-representation pack' for those on remand, which will include a Bible or Gospel. These great projects will be a fitting way of remembering Sam, and his passion for prisons work in Kenya. "I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was ill and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me” (Matthew 25:36).[/p][p]******[/p][p]Back on 23 October, Sam's wife of three months, Emily Moodey, wrote this:[/p][p]'On the 21st October 2018, our lives changed for forever. Our precious and wonderful Sam left us to go and be with Jesus. A husband, a son, a brother, and an amazing friend to so many people from all through his walk of life. Our time together was short but so very sweet. We will all miss him every hour of every day until we see him again in heaven. Sam will be enjoying all the sausage rolls he can get his hands on, jamming to jazz music, knocking a football around and telling everyone that Spurs really do have the best team in the world. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all of the love and support our families have been shown over these difficult few days.'[/p][p]Sam was passionate about using his legal skills for the benefit of the most disadvantaged, not just the wealthy. In 2013-14 he spent nine months in Kenya as a legal intern for the Christian lawyers' charity CLEAR International, which provides legal education, legal aid and research to the poorest people in East Africa, including those unjustly held in prisons. More information about CLEAR can be found from Sam's own fundraising page back in 2013, and from his wonderful blog while in Kenya.[/p][p]We would love to honour Sam's memory by making a big donation to CLEAR International to support its prisons work in Kenya, and maybe even establish a project or a prize in Sam's name. CLEAR International is part of The Lawyers' Christian Fellowship (LCF), a registered charity no 113928, so donations can be made in confidence and can be Gift Aided.[/p]
