[p]I am raising awareness about MND Motor Neurone Disease a little known rare condition that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves in the brain and spinal cord. Messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting. There is no cure, no treatment and very little research into this cruel disease. I am supporting the MND Association because my brother Bill who was diagnosed with ALS - a kind of MND - sadly passed away just before Christmas on 19/12/2015 having fought such a brave battle. He was out of the hospice, peacefully at home in his own bed, where he wanted to be, surrounded by those who loved him. It is a surprise how quickly it has all happened. Bill was always a great outdoors person, an organiser, enjoying and leading walks in the hills, climbing mountains, taking great photos, golfing, cheering on the cricket, eating particularly curries, drinking, travelling, discussing, advising, all of which was snatched away leaving him weak and unable to eat, speak or comfortably breathe. Just last year he was in Edinburgh walking up the Mound and sharing a family meal. I decided then to complete the London to Paris cycle ride in support of MNDA which is a fantastic organisation which supports those who have to go through this and their loved ones and carers. Bill and Monica were there in June, bravely cheering underneath the Eiffel Tower as I cycled in. it wasn't at all easy for him. Since then I decided to complete a bike ride every year. I told Bill and he chose the first one 3 Cities for me with a big grin on his face. Cycling in 4 countries England, France, Belgium and Holland and visiting London, Bruges and Amsterdam. Although Bill was no longer with us, we were thinking of him. Monica and her friends were there at the finish. Two of Bill's close friends John Stevenson and Andrew Fisher took on the challenge too and kept me going the right way. We did it! 383 miles in 4 days. They have been raising money for this worthwhile cause too which is a life line for so many people with this horrible disease. The next year was cycling coast to coast along the Hadrians Wall cycle route and last year I cycled the Outer Hebrides From Vatersay to Ness. This year's Bike4Bill is going to be coast to coast across Ireland from Dublin to Galway. The plan is to cycle from Liverpool to Holyhead, ferry to Dublin and then cycle to Galway. Jamie, our oldest (Bill's nephew) is going to join me.[/p][p]I have always funded all the costs myself and all money raised has gone straight to MNDA. [/p][p]Please support if you can. Together we can make a difference and help others with this incurable disease.[/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p][p][br][/p]
