Story

[p]Thank you for taking the time to visit this page in memory of Jack Smith.[/p][p]Jack passed away on 2nd June 2014, aged 11, after a 3-week stay on the Childrens Ward of University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire. Jack was a special boy who had suffered with a rare Mitochondrial Disorder called Kearns Sayers Syndrome for the last 8 years of his life. Jacks ongoing treatment had involved regular stays in hospital and a cocktail of more than 30 supplements and medicines each day to keep his body in balance.[/p][p]Despite Jacks condition, he never once moaned about the hospital trips or amount of medication he had to take. He preferred instead to spend his time telling jokes and playing tricks on his friends and family. Jack had a wicked sense of humour ![/p][p]Jack was a true inspiration to his family and friends in fact anyone who met Jack could not help but be inspired by his courage and spirit in the face of such difficult circumstances.[/p][p]Jacks family and friends have already raised over &pound30,000 in his memory to set up a family room on the childrens ward at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire. "Jacks Room" is almost complete, and will be a private and quiet place away from the busy ward for parents to spend time with their child following his or her passing.[/p][p]Jacks parents, Dean and Jackie would like to continue fundraising in support of his legacy by now creating "Jacks Gift". Jacks Gift will provide The Lily Foundation with much needed support to help in the battle against Mitochondrial Disorder. The Lily Foundation was founded in memory of Lily, who lost her battle to Mitochondrial Disease at just eight months old. This foundation has three aims: To fund research to improve diagnosis and increase treatment options, and ultimately find a cure. To raise much needed awareness of the condition both in the general population and the medical community and to support families affected by this condition.[/p][p]For more information on The Lily Foundation please visit[/p][p]http://www.thelilyfoundation.org.uk[/p][p]To help raise funds for the charity, Dean and eight of his very middle-aged friends are cycling from Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, leaving on Thursday 2nd July 2015, to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, arriving on Sunday 5th July 2015. This generally unfit group of nine will need to cover 420km in 4 days to complete this difficult challenge. We hope that this will demonstrate a tiny amount of the strength and courage, which Jack showed in battling the disease, which ultimately claimed his life.[/p][p]We are asking people to sponsor us to help raise &pound10,000 in support of The Lily Foundation and the great work it does in the research of Mitochondrial Disorder. We hope that Jacks Gift will continue his legacy and ultimately help to find a cure for this life threatening disease.[/p][p]Thank you for taking the time to visit this page, and thank you for your support.[/p][p]Dean and Jackie Smith[/p]
