[p]As many of you know we Ruth, Kathryn and Ken are currently serving in Uganda on our gap year with the charity, Smile International. Here in Uganda, Smile takes part of many different projects including school work, child sponsorship, womens empowerment programmes, community outreach and childrens work in the slums.[/p] [p]A significant part of our work as the Gap Year Team is teaching English. Every week we work with a small primary school called Ruth Mother Care, teaching English to the children there, who range in age from about 4 -9 years old. We have been teaching here for 5 months now and have developed such a love for this school, the children and teachers here.[/p][p][lt]img title="Baby Class" src="" alt="Teacher Ruth, the Gappers, and Teacher Machu with Baby class" width="737" height="553" /[gt][/p] [p]Ruth, the Head Teacher, is a brilliant teacher with a great vision for the school and its development. She has created a loving, supportive, Christian environment for the children to learn and play in. Recently, the school has had a new building constructed thanks to a mission trip team from Southwick Baptist Church, which has made a huge improvement to the facilities. This year the intake of pupils has increased and it is great to see the school growing.[/p][p][lt]img title="Ken Teaching" src="" alt="Ken helping students in Primary 1" width="747" height="553" /[gt][/p][p]We want to support the growth of this school, not only with teaching, but with resources as well, and a specific need for this school is textbooks. There are no English textbooks in the school for teachers or pupils, and we have found this a real challenge when teaching, and in knowing what the national curriculum requires the children to learn. Coming from the UK it is amazing to think that a school can run without electricity, computers, smart boards, or even textbooks, and yet, it is one of the most happy, loving schools we have seen.&nbsp[/p][p][lt]img title="Kathryn Teaching" src="" alt="Kathryn teaching Top and Middle class" width="737" height="553" /[gt][/p] [p]So, we have created this page to fundraise specifically for English language writing and reading textbooks for this school. We have set a target of &pound500 - enough to buy textbooks for every child in the school, as well as some for the teachers to help with lesson planning and exam preparation. We feel that this is such an important need for the children and it will improve their learning dramatically. Just to have a book with colours, pictures, and engaging exercises will give them a more rounded learning experience, and greatly increase their reading and writing skills.[/p][p][lt]img title="Primary 3" src="" alt="The Gappers and Teacher Monica with Primary 3 class" width="735" height="553" /[gt][/p][p]In the UK education is a right for all children and so often we take this for granted. In Uganda, children face so many challenges just to complete their education, but it is so important that they do as it is how they can escape the cycle of poverty they have been born into. Children here deserve the same rights as children in the west. All we can do is help them step-by-step to make things better, which is our goal for this fundraising page.&nbsp[/p][p][lt]img title="Ruth Teaching" src="" alt="Ruth helping a student in Primary 2" width="749" height="553" /[gt][/p] [p]We hope we have given you a good picture of this amazing school, the dedicated teachers and the wonderful children. However big or small, we would be so grateful for any donation you can make to this cause. Just &pound5 can buy one textbook for a child at Ruth Mother Care. All donations will go through Smile Internationals education fund and will then come directly to us in Uganda so we can buy the right textbooks in country, and then give them to Ruth Mother Care School.[/p] [p]We want to thank everyone who has read this and who has given to this cause. You are making a real difference for these children. We will keep you informed with updates of our fundraising and, the best part, when we can give the school their new textbooks.[/p] [p]Thank you.[/p][p][lt]img title="Primary 1" src="" alt="Teacher Monica and the Gappers with Primary 1 class" width="750" height="553" /[gt][/p][p][/p]
