The CALM Squad - fundraising for CALM

CALM Squad

“This is amazing news. Myself and the team are absolutely over the moon, what a beautiful and kind gesture”.

This was the reaction from Taylor McLaughlin when we told him that The Calm Squad were one of our £500 donation winners.

The team consists of a group of ‘18 normal blokes wanting to make a change in and around mens mental health, promoting the fact its okay not to be okay and that we are fighting together and not alone’.

THE CALM SQUAD decided to put themselves to the test by taking on ‘The National 3 Peaks Challenge’.

Considered one of Britain's toughest outdoor challenges, the National 3 Peaks Challenge takes in the dizzy heights of Ben Nevis (1,344m), Scafell Pike (978m) and Snowdon (1,085m). Over the course of 24hrs, they trekked around 26 miles and ascended to a total height of almost 3,000m.

The team completed this challenge for a charity called CALM. The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is leading a movement against suicide. Every week 125 people in the UK take their own lives. And 75% of all UK suicides are male. CALM exists to change this.

Stuart Priscott - fundraising for Chance to Shine

Stuart Priscott

It is wonderful to be one of the Virgin Money Giving prize winners. The whole cycling challenge from John O’Groats to Land’s End was amazing both in terms of the fantastic experience and also the ability to raise funds for two great charities - Chance to Shine and CYstic Fibrosis Trust. As a person with CF I know what difference research and new drugs can mean to living well. My life has also been enriched by the opportunities I have had through sport, cricket in particular, to stay active and make life long friends.

I hope many others can benefit in the ways I have through the unbelievable generosity of others in supporting this fundraising adventure.

June winners

Alan Hewitt – fundraising for Children with Cancer

Alan Hewitt

"Fundraising during the COVID pandemic has been more of a challenge than usual, as I have less contact with people, and it has required the use of some additional incentives. I decided to add two other events to help raise awareness of what I was doing, and to promote the fundraising. These were a 24hr mountain biking event on our local hill, and a three day / 200 mile mountain biking event at the end of July.

The above two events plus the huge challenge of the London Marathon, have brought out the best in my family and friends. Plus my employer has made a generous donation into my charity account. All of this support has enabled me to already be close to my fundraising goals.

However, today I heard that I am Virgin Money Giving’s fundraising prize winner for the month of June. This is the icing on the cake and takes me over my fundraising goal. I am delighted to accept this amazing gift on behalf of Children with Cancer.

I would like to say one final THANK YOU to Virgin Money Giving, this journey has been made so much easier by the helpful hints and tips. You have made this journey a pleasure and I will continue to use them for all my future fundraising activities."

Elizabeth Laycock – fundraising for The National Deaf Children’s Society

Elizabeth Laycock

"This will be my third London Marathon but I have found the training and fundraising so much harder this time round. I think training in the spring and summer after a year of pandemic inactivity hasn't helped matters! And fundraising has been that bit harder too because of losing contact with people due to the Covid restrictions. This prize will help massively towards my fundraising target and will also make a difference to the work of the wonderful charity for whom I'm running - the National Deaf Children's Society."

Thanks so much!
