Jackie's fundraising story

“So many people will want to help you make a difference”

Jackie Scully made headlines at the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon by combining the big day with her own big day: marrying her partner Duncan on the Cutty Sark before they ran the race together, raising an incredible £30,000 for their charities in the process. Here, she shares her fundraising experience.

Make it personal

“Share your training journey – the emotional highs, lows and humorous Vaseline worries – on your fundraising page. Friends, family and connections will see just how much the marathon (and your chosen charity) mean to you.”

Go direct

“Just because you share a post on Facebook or Twitter, doesn’t mean your friends will always see it. Personal emails that highlight relevant details are a lot more powerful and will make it easier to keep track of who knows what. Messages around payday can be particularly effective.”

Follow up

“Busy lives often get in the way of good intentions. A gentle nudge can get those who promise to donate to actually click on your fundraising page.”

Get creative

“Would colleagues pay you to stop talking about your marathon-sized blisters and long runs? Would an impromptu bake sale get you over the fundraising finish line? Preparing for the physical challenge of the marathon can feel all-consuming, but a few extra commitments won’t wreak havoc on your training plan.”

Start a marathon sweepstake

“Getting people to guess your finish time for a few pounds is a great way to boost those coffers. Split the pot between the charity and the best guess (who might just donate their share anyway) and everyone wins!”

Just ask

“As terrifying as it can sometimes be to ask for donations, it is amazing just how many people out there will really want to help you make a difference. Sometimes the only thing stopping you, is you.”
