One foot in front of the other

Message wall, running for mum

This week we've been on the ground at the Virgin Money London Marathon Running Show as thousands of runners and fundraising heroes come to register and collect their running numbers. There is no doubt that this magnificent event is a celebration. It's a chance to get last minute running tips, hear inspirational stories, shop a little and join in on some fun activities. It's also an opportunity to meet with representatives from many of the charities that the runners are pounding the streets of London to raise for funds for.

For many people, meeting up with the charities can be a very emotional experience; months and months of training to support a charity they are connected to can be very emotive. You will often see the amazing volunteers and representatives from the charities wiping away tears as they thank these fantastic fundraisers for all their hard work and efforts.

Within the Virgin Money Giving Challenge Zone amongst the fun and games we have a Message Wall - a place where runners and supporters can write personal messages. Many of the messages left are to wish good luck, congratulate and to make people smile but alongside these you will find messages detailing reasons for running and in some cases messages of remembrance.

These emotional messages are a real testament to human spirit. When families and friends receive life changing news, the overwhelming sadness and grief leads people to think they will be unable to manage or cope - but it is in these situations that human strength comes into play and we are able to carry on. For so many of these people, they have turned the energy of fear and grief into an energy to inspire, support and provide positive change for others.

Running the Virgin Money London Marathon feels like a metaphor for so many of these human stories, regardless of the pain, the doubt or the fear we, as human beings, put one foot in front of the other and carry on. It's what we do.

We hope to see you at the Running Show and from everyone at Virgin Money Giving, you are amazing and #ThanksaBillion for raising even more for charity. You’ve got this!
